The tradition of the orange throwinghas its roots in the middle of the nineteenth century. Earlier and more specifically in the Middle Ages, beans were used in this battle: it is said that twice a year the lord gave a pot of beans to poor families, and, out of disrespect, threw the beans on the streets.

The beans were used then, in time of carnival as fun ammunition to be thrown upon the unsuspecting adversaries. A large historical gap prevents the beans to understand how it is past the launch of the oranges.

The first battle took place between people on the balconies and pedestrian, with the use of flowers, confetti and orange, in imitation of the great maritime Nice Carnival from which the first citrus.Consolidated as a tradition, the battle soon assumed the character of a real clash, which took to the streets from the balconies.

But it is only since World War II who took the actual values: Today the contest is held in the streets of the old town and are engaged on opposite sides of the wagon crews (symbol of the guards of the tyrant) and teams of orange throwers on foot (the rebellious ), which consist of hundreds of shooters. And 'this is certainly the most spectacular moment of the struggle for freedom that is represented in thecarnival of Ivrea.
